Breast reduction surgery offers a number of benefits.
Larger breasts put a lot of additional strain on the upper body, resulting in ongoing neck, back and shoulder pain that often requires medication to manage. For some patients, removing excess breast tissue can lead to a better quality life.
Rashes underneath the breasts and the general discomfort caused by clothing that doesn’t fit correctly can be frustrating. Breast reduction surgery can eliminate this discomfort and help your clothing fit more comfortably too.
Over time, the weight of large breasts can result in sagging, which will affect the overall appearance of your breasts as well as your confidence. Breast reduction surgery can reduce sagging and lift the breasts to a more comfortable position.
A general anaesthetic is required to complete breast reduction surgery.
During your procedure, there are three different types of incisions that can be used, all of which start around the areola. The anchor and lollipop incision are the two most popular incision techniques to use during breast reduction surgery.
The lollipop incision starts around the areola and runs vertically down towards the crease of each breast. The anchor incision starts out the same but instead of the incision stopping at the start the breast crease, it runs horizontally across the crease too.
Leaving the nipple tethered to the necessary nerves and blood supply, excess fat and breast tissue are removed. The breasts are then lifted and shaped before the incisions are closed.
A compression garment will need to be worn for several weeks during your recovery to reduce swelling and provide the breasts with the necessary support. Patients need to spend a week or two recovering at home and will need to refrain from their usual activities for about six weeks.
The final results of your surgery will only be evident after several months.
